Since 1966 the landfill operated by the Alkaloid
Chemistry Factory of Tiszavasvári was used by the city and the factory as well,
and different kind of toxic wastes, garbage, sludge and sewage was taken here.
During the establishment and construction of the landfill and storages there
were not any kind of safety equipment installed, and through the years, the
area was a constant pollution source.
The remediation was started by the KELET-SPEECK Ltd.
As its subcontractor our company was assigned to make a prior environmental
impact assessment. In the assessment the general environmental risks, the
characteristics of the human exposure and the impact of the different wastes
were evaluated. The schedule of the design and the establishment of the
remediation and the connected equipment was planned as well. The created
assessment and the schedule were later the basis of the technical intervention
and modernization of the landfill.
In the area as a result of decades of dumping wastes
of various origins a significant TPH, BTEX, VOCl, PAH and toxic heavy metal
contamination was discovered in the soil and groundwater.
