The three, individually 100 m3 and one 25 m3 underground fuel-oil storage tank of the Hospital of Cardiology in Balatonfüred were constructed in the late 1960’s, but the necessary safety equipment was not installed. In 1977 on the 31st of August a pipe break was noticed in a 5 meters depth, and an unknown amount of fuel-oil leaked away. Assigned by the Balatonfüred Public Hospital in 1995 the ENERGO PROJECT Ltd. invited entries for a competition for damage controlling and remediation in the area, which was won by our company.

Although the amount of the originally drained oil was unknown, during the investigation more than
500 liters of free phase HC was identified.

Before the damage control and remediation operation started, the storage tanks and the concrete elements involved were exchanged or cleaned, or disassembled and taken to the town’s landfill.

The soil remediation was carried out by using in situ and ex situ enzymatic soil treatment technologies, meanwhile as a water treatment method an inclined plate emulsion filter, an active carbon air filter and a diffuser ventilation system was used. At the same time the free phase fuel-oil in the production wells was skimmed. With these methods the contamination was completely eliminated, which was verified by the follow-up monitoring measurements as well.
